Shine Bright!
Have you ever used a flashlight in the dark? Maybe you were camping, or the power went out at home. Without the light, you couldn’t see where to go—you might bump into things or trip. But when the flashlight came on, everything looked different. You could see clearly, and it felt safer. Jesus says that following Him is like being a light in the world. The world can be a dark place—people don’t always know what is right, what is true, or how much God loves them. But when we follow Jesus, our lives can help others see the way to God. Jesus also said we are “the salt of the earth.” Just like salt makes food taste better, our love and kindness can make the world better. God put us here on purpose, to help people see Him and taste His goodness. Let’s find out how we can shine and season for Jesus!
Matthew 5:14, 16 (NIV)
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Discussion Questions
Activity – Light and Salt Challenge
Gather your family in a dark room with a flashlight. First, try walking around without the light. Then turn it on and notice the difference. Talk about how Jesus helps us see clearly and helps others see Him through us. Next, taste a tiny bit of plain popcorn or crackers without salt. Then add a little salt and taste again. Discuss how even a small amount makes a big difference—just like small acts of kindness, honesty, and love can make a big difference in someone’s life. As a family, pick one “light” action (helping, encouraging, sharing Jesus) and one “salt” action (making life better for someone) to do together this week.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for making us salt and light. Help our family shine brightly so others can see Your love. Show us how to make the world a better place with kindness, joy, and truth. May everything we do point people to You. Amen.
Memory Work
New City Catechism
33. Should those who have faith in Christ seek their salvation through their own works, or anywhere else?
No, they should not, as everything necessary to salvation is found in Christ. To seek salvation through good works is a denial that Christ is the only Redeemer and Savior.
Memory Verse
Romans 6:23 (ESV)
"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Matthew 5:14, 16 (NIV)
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
