Following Jesus When Everyone’s Shouting

Have you ever been at a basketball game or a school assembly where everyone was yelling and cheering so loudly you couldn’t even hear yourself think? Maybe people were shouting different things, and it was hard to tell what was going on. That’s kind of what happened in the Bible story today. A big crowd got really angry because people were starting to follow Jesus, and it messed with their money and their favorite traditions. They started shouting and got so loud and confused that many people didn’t even know why they were yelling!

But guess what? Jesus teaches us not to join in with the shouting just to fit in. He shows us a better way—a way of peace, calm, and truth. Even when others are angry or afraid, we can be different because we follow Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Let’s read what happened.

Acts 19:32, 36 NIV
The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there...Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash.

Discussion Questions
  1. What do you think it felt like to be in that big, noisy crowd?
  2. Why do you think people were so upset about Paul talking about Jesus?
  3. What are some ways we can stay calm and follow Jesus when others around us are upset or acting unkind?

Activity – “Truth vs. Shouting” Game
Play a quick game with your family. One person will be the “truth teller,” and everyone else will try to shout silly things at the same time (like “I like pizza!” or “Dogs are better than cats!”). Then stop and let the “truth teller” say something from the Bible like, “Jesus is King,” or “God loves us.” Talk about how hard it was to hear the truth when everyone was yelling.

Then ask: How can we make sure we listen to Jesus even when the world is loud?

Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank You for being our peace in a noisy world. Help us not to follow the crowd when people are upset or angry. Teach us to listen to You, speak with love, and live with calm hearts. Help our family to follow You even when it’s hard. In Your name, Amen.

Memory Work:

New City Catechism
17. What is idolatry?
Sin is rejecting or ignoring God in the world he created, rebelling against him by living without reference to him, not being or doing what he requires in his law—resulting in our death and the disintegration of all creation.

Ezekiel 36:26
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.
